Is MSI Leaving The AMD GPU Market?
MSI Radeon RX 7000-series graphics card supply has dried up worldwide. Retailers in Australia, United States, Germany and Italy are all reporting the same thing: all existing Radeon RX 7000 GPU listings have disappeared. Apart from a few RX 7900 XTX Gaming Trio listing, all MSI’s RX 7000-series supply has quietly vanished.
Despite being uninformed of exactly what MSI’s official stance on the matter is, it is undeniable that MSI has completely withdrawn from the AMD GPU market, at least with AMD’s latest GPUs. There have been signs of this departure for some time now. MSI ahs not been debuting any of AMD’s newer mid-range GPUs such as the RX 7800 XT, 7700 XT and RX 7900 GRE. MSI has not built any RX 7000-series apart from the RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT and RX 7600 8GB – which were the first 3 RDNA3 GPUs AMD launched. MSI was also absent from AMD’s partner list during the debut of the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT.
Until MSI releases an official statement on the matter, we can only speculate as to what is really going on. It is possible that MSI could be pulling out due to insufficient sales and therefore revenue from AMD GPU sales. Despite modern GPUs being expensive, it has long been suspected that board partners don’t profit much from GPU sales. This would necessitate large GPU production volumes to maintain profitability.
It wouldn’t be surprising if this is the kind of problem MSI is dealing with. It is no secret that Nvidia GPU’s outsell AMD GPUs significantly. If MSI isn’t selling enough AMD cards, the company would have no choice but to shut down AMD graphics card production. Take the above with a grain of salt as it is based on third-party reports and presumption. We do not know what is going on behind MSI’s closed doors. The positive in all this, if MSI is pulling out of AMD GPU production, is that the company is still producing and selling Nvidia graphics cards. MSI won’t be dropping out the GPU game entirely, like EVGA.
