Canon hit by Ransomware – 10TB of data stolen
Last week Canon was hit by a massive ransomware attack resulting in widespread technical outages on their major websites as well as internally.
Canon has stated that some photo and videos saved before the 16th of June have been lost, however they say that no personal data has been leaked. “Currently, the still image thumbnails of these lost image files can be viewed but not downloaded or transferred,” said Canon. This would suggest that this is only a technical issue on their servers, however an internal message said that employees should be warned of company-wide issues including apps, Microsoft Teams, and email.
Who is behind the ransomware?
Well known threat actor, Maze, is believed to be behind the attack after stating that they had successfully stolen 10TB of data from Canon. Maze members normally target large enterprise companies, using malware to encrypt networks, holding their information hostage. A ransom message is then displayed, demanding money in return for the user’s information, sometimes charging up to thousands of dollars. If payment is not made then they threaten to release the stolen information to the public. An example of this happening was when recently Maze published data belonging to LG and Xerox after they refused to pay the ransom fee.
As of yet, none of Canon’s data has been released to the public.
