Bonus Microsoft Editor virtual assistant will be coming to Microsoft Word from July 2020
Microsoft has announced that the similarity checker tool available with the Microsoft Editor virtual assistance will be coming to Microsoft Word.
Microsoft plans to start implementing the new feature to all Microsoft 365 users from July 2020, starting with Education customers, with Consumer and Enterprise to follow later this year. Initially there will only be support for English, but more languages will be available later on in the year.
The principle Product Manager for Microsoft, Mike Tholfsen, had this to say: “Powered by Bing Search, the Similarity checker can identify and help writers with originality in their writing and learn more about appropriate attribution through tools that facilitate the easy insertion of relevant citations,”
The function of this tool is to allow customers to always know when a citation is needed, and add it quickly and easily add it if the tool detects similarities with online sources.
There are different citation styles available, from MLA, APA and Chicago. Word will add the citation after the text passage, and automatically put quotation marks around it. Any text that is longer than 40 words that exactly matches an online source will be formatted as block-quotes that will need the user to provide commentary on.
Microsoft Editor is a new feature to Office 365 writing virtual assistant that is accessible through Word, Outlook and the internet as a standalone browser extension on Microsoft Edge or Chrome. Editor allows users to easily correct spelling and grammar to improve the writing, and supports more than 20 languages.
