Windows Storage Spaces bug in latest Windows build 2004

Last week we discussed some of the latest features offered in the new Build 2004 update for Windows 10. Unfortunately, a bug has surfaced affecting Windows Storage Spaces.  According to Microsoft, users may have issues accessing Storage Spaces configuration on their devices after updating to version 2004 on their Windows 10 PC or server.

Storage Spaces is a Windows technology made to safeguard user’s data from drive failures by storing copies across multiple drives using software. Microsoft urges users to avoid running the ‘chkdsk’ command until the issue has been resolved.

At this time there is no way around the issue, but users can still access their data by marking it as read-only first. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Select start and search for powershell.
  • Right click on it and Run as administrator.
  • In the powershell window, type the following command and press enter: get-virtualdisk | ? WriteCacheSize -gt 0 | get-disk | set-disk -IsReadOnly $true
  • This will set your Storage Spaces to read-only, which means you will not be able to alter them.

To download and install Windows 10, version 2004, use Windows Update (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update). For more information, see this video.

Microsoft is currently working on fixing the issue and will provide an update when there is more information available.
